Beyond the Bottle: Comparing the Pros and Cons of Bottled and Canned Wines

According to the Wine Institute, the wine industry produces an estimated 34.1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions each year. A significant portion of these emissions come from the production, packaging, and transportation of bottled wine. For example, producing one ton of glass emits about 500 kg of CO2. In contrast, canned wine generates 20-30% fewer greenhouse gas emissions during production and transportation, according to a study by the Beverage Industry Environmental Roundtable. Additionally, aluminum cans are infinitely recyclable, whereas glass bottles can only be recycled a limited number of times.

When it comes to convenience, canned wine has a clear advantage. A standard 750 ml bottle of wine weighs around 2.65 pounds, while a 375 ml can of wine weighs just 0.4 pounds. This makes canned wine much easier to transport, whether you're hiking, picnicking, or traveling. And with a can, there's no need to worry about bringing a corkscrew or finding a way to reseal the bottle if you don't finish it. Plus, single-serve cans make it easy to enjoy a glass of wine without committing to a full bottle.
