Beyond the Bottle: Comparing the Pros and Cons of Bottled and Canned Wines

Hello wind lovers,

Welcome to the second edition of our weekly newsletter, "Can't Get Enough 38 Wine"! Today, we'll be discussing the age-old debate: bottled wine vs. canned wine. Which is better?

Let's start by looking at the environmental impact of both. According to the Wine Institute, the wine industry produces an estimated 34.1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions each year. A significant portion of these emissions come from the production, packaging, and transportation of bottled wine. For example, producing one ton of glass emits about 500 kg of CO2. In contrast, canned wine generates 20-30% fewer greenhouse gas emissions during production and transportation, according to a study by the Beverage Industry Environmental Roundtable. Additionally, aluminum cans are infinitely recyclable, whereas glass bottles can only be recycled a limited number of times.

When it comes to convenience, canned wine has a clear advantage. A standard 750 ml bottle of wine weighs around 2.65 pounds, while a 375 ml can of wine weighs just 0.4 pounds. This makes canned wine much easier to transport, whether you're hiking, picnicking, or traveling. And with a can, there's no need to worry about bringing a corkscrew or finding a way to reseal the bottle if you don't finish it. Plus, single-serve cans make it easy to enjoy a glass of wine without committing to a full bottle.

Now, you might be wondering how the taste of canned wine compares to bottled wine. The truth is, the taste can vary depending on the type of wine and the quality of the packaging. However, canned wine has come a long way in recent years. Today, many high-quality wines are available in cans, including some award-winning varietals. At 38 Wine, our canned wine brand, Grooves, is made with sustainably grown grapes in California and undergoes rigorous taste testing to ensure a delicious and consistent flavor profile.

Ultimately, the choice between bottled and canned wine comes down to personal preference. But if you're looking for a more eco-friendly and convenient option, canned wine is worth considering.

Stay tuned for next week's newsletter, where we'll be discussing the trend of sparkling wine in cans.
